Eduard Kurzbauer

Life

Eduard Kurzbauer came to the Reiffenstein lithographic institute in Vienna in 1856 , but became a pupil of the Vienna Academy in 1857 , attended the Academy until 1861 and then tried his hand at different directions without a lead.

It was only in 1867 that he knew how to attract attention with the painting of a fairy teller . Kurzbauer studied from May 30, 1868 at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich . In 1868 she also opened Piloty's atelier for him , in which he studied for two years and then continued his own training. He achieved his first great success with the figurative genre painting Die overtaken refugees (1870, in the gallery of the Imperial and Royal Belvedere Palace in Vienna, engraved by Johannes Sonnenleiter ), an achievement which he has never surpassed.

Only in coloring did he make considerable progress towards a broader painterly treatment. Of his other works the following are to be mentioned:

The refugees overtaken
  • The rejected suitor (1871)
  • Groundless jealousy
  • The Stormy Engagement Day (1874)
  • The election meeting
  • The wine tasting (both 1874)
  • Before the burial (1875)
  • Defamation (1877, Dresden Gallery)

Kurzbauer combined a clear view of the characteristics of people and situations with a deep understanding of what can be used artistically and a mischievous, unlikely humor. Even where he depicts human weaknesses and pathological conditions, he knew how to keep the right measure with fine tact. Its color was advantageously distinguished by depth and clarity. He died in Munich on January 13, 1879.

In 1889 the Kurzbauergasse in Vienna- Leopoldstadt (2nd district) was named after him.
