Robert Lindsay, 29th Earl of Crawford
Robert Alexander Lindsay, 29th Earl of Crawford , KT , GCVO , PC (born March 5, 1927 ) is a British peer , politician and Conservative Party member . He is the hereditary chief of Clan Lindsay .
Life
He is the eldest son of David Lindsay, 28th Earl of Crawford and his wife Mary Katherine Cavendish. He attended Eton College and then studied at Trinity College of Cambridge University . He has held the courtesy title of Lord Balniel since 1940, when his father inherited the earliest dignity . From 1945 to 1949 he served as a lieutenant in the Grenadier Guards .
Lindsay was from 1955 to February 1974 for the Hertford constituency and February to October 1974 for the constituency of Welwyn and Hatfield MP in the House of Commons . On January 24, 1975, after his many years in parliament as Baron Balniel , of Pitcorthie in the County of Fife , he was raised to Life Peer and thus a member of the House of Lords . When his father died on December 13 of the same year, he inherited his nobility titles as 29th Earl of Crawford and 12th Earl of Balcarres , as well as other subordinate titles. Since then he has usually been called the Earl of Crawford and Balcarres . Until 2019, while the senior title Earl of Sutherland was held by a woman, he was the most senior Earl of Scotland as Earl of Crawford .
From 1975 to 1988, Lindsay was a director at the National Westminster Bank . He has also served in various government organizations, particularly in the area of monument protection for Scotland. From 1980 to 1985 he was First Commissioner (Chairman) of the Crown Estate , from 1992 until her death in 2002 Lord Chamberlain of the Household of the Queen Mother . In 1996 he was accepted as a Knight Companion in the Thistle Order .
Since May 8, 2013 he has been released from membership in the House of Lords associated with his life peerage ( Leave of Absence ), presumably for reasons of age.
He is married and has two daughters and two sons, including his title heir Anthony Lindsay, Lord Balniel (* 1958).
