Robert Richter (entrepreneur)

Robert Richter (born May 17, 1899 in Nuremberg , † June 18, 1972 in Munich ) was a German cameraman, film producer, mechanical engineer and entrepreneur.

Life

Robert Richter was the son of the Imperial Persian Consul General and wholesale merchant Emil Richter, who in 1915 addressed the "tribal comrades" in America with the Deutsche Wacht association .

Robert Richter graduated from the Alte Realgymnasium , studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Munich and graduated with a diploma. In technical economics, he received his doctorate in 1930 at the University of Würzburg Dr. rer. pole. In the same year he started the construction of a light sound camera.

Richter was in contact with the Munich film pioneers Peter Ostermayr and Martin Kopp , a cameraman for the Messter newsreel. Another teacher was the cameraman Bartl Seyr , who was commissioned by the Bavarian Ministry of War to produce propaganda films for the war loan. In 1917, Richter, together with August Arnold , the Arnold & Richter Cine Technik and brought the company to the worldwide renown.

The wild west strip The Black Jack, filmed in September 1918 in the Mangfall valley near Munich, was a first great success. In-house production in 1920 came The vultures of the gold mines , the intoxication of love, beware! High tension! Mortal danger !, The Mexican's revenge . The following year The Flame Ride of the Pacific Express, The Yellow Strangler and Texas Fred's Bride Ride followed .

On a trip to America, Richter worked in the studios of William Fox , in the Rothacker Film Laboratorien and at Famous Players Lasky. The Arriflex 35, a light, handy, electrically operated single-lens reflex camera for normal film appeared in 1937 at the Leipzig trade fair. During the Second World War, Richter served in the Air Force as a sergeant and pilot.

Richter resumed contact with American film friends after the war. Fox's Tönende Wochenschau was copied in Munich. The US Army Signal Corps ordered Arriflex cameras. The reflex system was used for the cine camera. Arriflex 16 went into series production. In Business Screen Magazine , the Arriflex 16 was presented as the epitome of a professional 16 mm camera due to its technical innovations, its versatility, its robustness and its reliability.
