Robert Storr

Robert Storr (born December 28, 1949 in Portland (Maine) ) is an American curator , art critic and painter .

Life

“Rob” Storr was born to Richard J. Storr (1915–2011), a professor of American history . His mother was also a historian. He grew up mainly in Chicago , where his father taught at the University of Chicago . He studied history and French at Swarthmore College in the US state of Pennsylvania until 1972 . At the School of the Art Institute of Chicago , he earned a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) and turned to realistic painting. He has worked as a curator since 1990 and as a senior curator in the painting and sculpture department at the Museum of Modern Art since 2002 .

In 2007 Storr curated the central exhibition of the 52nd Venice Biennale under the title Think with the Senses - Feel with the Mind (Think with the senses - Feel with the mind). In the Arsenale , the Turkish Pavilion and the Giardini, he showed works by around 100 artists and groups, including numerous installations that were created especially for this Biennale. Storr was the first American to direct the exhibition since it was founded in 1895. His selection of artists was well received by the press.

Storr is the author of numerous books and catalogs, among others on Gerhard Richter , Philip Guston , Alex Katz , Chuck Close and Louise Bourgeois . He writes for the newspapers and magazines Art in America (since 1981), Artforum , Parkett , Art Press (Paris), Frieze (London) and Corriere della Sera (Milan) , among others . From 2002 he was the first Rosalie Solow Professor of Modern Art at the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University .
