Robert Manuel Wald (born June 29, 1947 in New York City ) is an American physicist who specializes in general relativity and the thermodynamics of black holes . He is the author of the very popular and widely used book General Relativity .
Life
Wald studied at Columbia University (Bachelor 1968) and received his doctorate in 1972 from Princeton University under John Wheeler with the thesis Nonspherical gravitational collapse and black hole uniqueness . As a post-doc he was at the University of Maryland and from 1974 at the University of Chicago , where he became an assistant professor in 1976 and has been a professor since 1985. In 1976 he received a research grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation ( Sloan Research Fellowship ).
Wald is Professor at the Enrico Fermi Institute and at the University of Chicago, since 2002 as Charles H. Swift Distinguished Service Professor of Physics . He has authored over a hundred scientific publications, many of which have been cited over a hundred times.
He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2000) and the National Academy of Sciences (2001) and a Fellow of the American Physical Society (1996). For 2017 he was awarded the Einstein Prize of the American Physical Society.
