Robert Upshur "Bob" Woodward (born March 26, 1943 in Geneva , Illinois ) is an American journalist . He and Carl Bernstein uncovered the background to the Watergate affair as a reporter for the Washington Post .

Life

Woodward graduated from Yale University and served in the US Navy from 1965 to 1970 . He is now the Assistant Managing Editor of the Washington Post . As a reporter for the US capital newspaper, he and Bernstein uncovered the background to the Watergate affair and got help from a secret informant named Deep Throat , who was a member of the FBI. His identity was revealed on May 31, 2005: Mark Felt , then the second highest man in the FBI . From that time on, Woodward was long considered a star reporter and one of the most sought-after journalists in the United States. Since his positive engagement for George W. Bush after September 11, 2001 , he has also been valued more and more by the conservatives. With his book State of Denial , published in October 2006 , Woodward distanced himself from President Bush and painted a much more negative picture of his abilities and his administration.

Woodward's reputation suffered in November 2005 when, in an interrogation by special investigator Patrick Fitzgerald in charge of the Plame affair, he had to admit that he had long known the indiscretions of government officials that had led to the disclosure of Valerie Plame's identity . The Washington Post described this crime as " a deeply serious sin ."

The Watergate Affair was filmed in The Untouchables in 1976, starring Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman .

In September 2018 his book Fear: Trump in the White House was published , which gives insights into the White House and paints a gloomy picture of the administration of President Donald Trump .
