Robert Ritter von Dombrowski (1869–1932)

Robert Ritter von Dombrowski or Robert von Dombrowski (born April 2, 1869 in Úlice Castle , † October 15, 1932 in the care home in Lainz ) was a Bohemian ornithologist and taxidermist .

Live and act

His father was Raoul von Dombrowski (1833-1896), an older brother Ernst von Dombrowski (1862-1917) and a younger brother Karl von Dombrowski (1872-1951).

Dombrowski spent his youth and student days in Vienna and Lower Austria . In spring 1889 he went on a shorter zoological expedition in the Bosnian part of the Sava lowlands . Together with his brother Ernst, he explored Šabac and its surroundings in 1893 and 1894 . The bird catch from these expeditions was bought by the Bosnian-Herzegovinian State Museum . On August 1, 1895, Grigore Antipa (1867-1944) brought him to the Muzeul Național de Istorie Naturală Grigore Antipa in Bucharest , for which he worked until August 15, 1916. From 1906 to 1915 he was also responsible for the design of the zoological garden there. As early as 1892 in Vienna, Dombrowski toyed with the idea of founding a dermoplastic museological institute . It was only three years later that this idea took shape in Bucharest, and so he founded the Dobrudscha teaching materials and natural produce store with official approval , which was very successful under his leadership. From the Dobrogea regular price list came out, and so many of its products found their way into schools, museums and private collections throughout Europe. The bellows helped experts in researching the Romanian vertebrate world and gaining new knowledge.

Thanks to the rich ornithological material of the Romanian avifauna in his collection, he was able to publish his most important work Ornis Romaniae in 1912 . But he did not follow the trinary nomenclature according to Ernst Hartert . Nevertheless, with the help of hunters and farmers trained by him, he was able to identify 347 bird forms from the country. He was the first to describe the occurrence of the dwarf saw ( Mergellus albellus ) in the area of the lower Danube, which was initially doubted by many scientists of the time.

As a result of the First World War , Dombrowski lost all his belongings. Among the losses was a manuscript on Romania's mammals with drawings and pictures. Likewise, all of the specimen copies that he used for his manuscript disappeared without a trace during the turmoil. He returned to Vienna, where he initially took over the management of a hotel in Carinthia from 1922 to 1925 . Here he planned a research trip to Asia Minor , which he was never able to take. In 1926 he moved to Łuków , where he successfully collected for the teaching material institute of Michał Kamiński (1902–1959). At the end of his career he tried to set up a bird watching station in Lower Austria. But he lacked the means, so that this project failed.

During his life he published 23 hunting and zoological works, which u. a published in communications from the Ornithological Association in Vienna , the Zeitschrift fur Oologie und Ornithologie , Buletinul Societății de Șciințe din Bucureșci, România and Ornithological Yearbook . Dionisie Linția (1880–1952) translated and supplemented his work Ornis Romaniae in 1946 , which appeared under the title Păsările României (Ornis Romaniae) . In 1954, Linția published Volume 2 and 1955 Volume 3 under the title Păsările din RPR

Dedication names

In 1903 Victor von Tschusi zu Schmidhoffen named a subspecies of the yellow wagtail Budytes flavus dombrowskii , a name that is now considered a synonym for the nominate form Motacilla flava Linnaeus , 1758. Paul Matschie described Mustela (Ictis) dombrowskii in 1901 , a name that is now synonymous with the mouse weasel subspecies ( Mustela nivalis vulgaris Erxleben , 1777).
