Roberto Barbi

Roberto Barbi (born March 25, 1965 ) is a former Italian marathon runner .

In 1993 he was third and in 1994 second in the Florence Marathon . In 1995 he came seventh in the Turin Marathon and third in Florence.

In 1996 he was tested positive for ephedrine in a doping control and was banned for three months. The following year he finished second in Florence.

In 1998 he caused a stir when he improved his personal record at the New York City Marathon by more than three and a half minutes and finished sixth in 2:10:55 h. The following year he finished fourth in the Rome Marathon , finished 20th at the World Athletics Championships in Seville and was Italian champions as third overall in the Venice Marathon .

In 2000 he was sixth in Rome and seventh overall in the Turin Marathon again national champion. In autumn he improved his personal records in the half marathon and in the marathon to 1:01:49 h and 2:10:12 h and came second in the Milan marathon , finishing fifth at the Maratonina del Garda and third in Venice .

In 2001 he won the Maratona d'Europa . At the World Championships in Edmonton , he came in 60th and was subsequently disqualified after he was found erythropoietin (EPO) during an unannounced blood and urine test carried out shortly before the competition . The four-year ban imposed for this doping rule violation was later reduced to 25 months after Roberto Barbi made a confession.

After his return to competition he was soon on top again. In 2003 he finished fifth in the Ljubljana Marathon . In 2004 he won the Collemarathon, the Pisa Marathon and the Maratona del Piceno and was sixth overall in the Palermo Marathon and was Italian marathon champion for the third time. In 2005 he defended his title at the Maratona del Piceno. In 2007 and 2008 he came second at the Maratona del Lamone and, with his times of 2:18:57 and 2:17:20, he was in the world's top 5 of the year in the M40 age group.

On July 20, 2008, after the Marvejols - Mende half marathon, he tested positive for EPO again and was banned for life as a repeat offender.
