The Rock Creek is a 80 km long left tributary of the Clark Fork in the US state of Montana .
River course
The Rock Creek arises at the confluence of the West Fork and Middle Fork Rock Creek. The Ross Fork Rock Creek flows into the West Fork about 100 m above the junction . The Rock Creek flows in a predominantly northerly direction through the mountains. He crosses the Lolo National Forest . The course of the river is in Granite and Missoula Counties . The Montana Highway 102 follows the river along its entire route. The Rock Creek finally flows into the Clark Fork almost 30 km southeast of Missoula . The Rock Creek Airport is located 1.5 km east of the mouth on the opposite bank of the Clark Fork.
The Middle Fork Rock Creek is the main source river of Rock Creek. It has its origin in the mountain lake Little Johnson Lake at an altitude of 2,449 m . This is located below the Bitterroot Pass ( 2564 m ) on the northern flank of the Anaconda Range . Middle Fork Rock Creek flows north through the mountains and after 35 km it reaches West Fork Rock Creek, with which it joins to Rock Creek. About 3 km before that, the East Fork Rock Creek meets the Middle Fork Rock Creek when coming from the east. The upper reaches of Middle Fork Rock Creek lies in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest .
Hydrology
The Rock Creek drains an area of 2302 km². The mean discharge is 14.8 m³ / s. In May and June the river carries the largest amounts of water with a monthly mean of 43 and 48 m³ / s respectively.
fauna
The river is a popular destination for anglers, especially fly fishing . In Rock Creek u. a. the following fish species: rainbow trout , cutthroat trout , trout , bull trout and coregonus (whitefish).
