Rock for one world

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rock for one World (ROW) is a benefit festival that has been held annually in Esslingen am Neckar in the Komma cultural center since 2005 . Visitors from all over Germany, Switzerland and France regularly travel to the festival.

Emergence

The initiator of the ROW Festival is Ralf Schulz, who survived the 2004 tsunami in Southeast Asia while on vacation in Thailand . After returning home almost unhurt, he started the first ROW to raise funds for the victims of this disaster. As a former drummer for the heavy metal bands Tyran 'Pace and Sinner , Schulz used his numerous contacts with musicians and bands to realize the project.

concept

In contrast to other benefit festivals, all costs such as GEMA fees or posters are fully financed in advance by sponsors. No band receives fees or hidden benefits, all employees work free of charge. This guarantees a surplus even before the event. The entire entrance fee (not just the proceeds as usual), excess sponsorship money and the entire beverage sales benefit the respective donation purpose. The organizers endeavor to be as transparent as possible.

So far, two local partners, the Komma cultural center and the Esslingen musician initiative EMI, have taken over the costs for the venue and drinks. Although the ROW is one of the smaller events, the familiar, informal atmosphere has always succeeded in winning well-known bands for the project. The positive reception is also reflected in the increasing number of visitors.

history

  • In 2005 the first “Rock for one World” benefit festival took place. Despite a short preparation time, Ralf Schulz managed to win some well-known bands for the project with the help of friends and music colleagues. The headliners were Primal Fear . Another highlight was the reunion of the metal band Tyran 'Pace around the Primal Fear singer Ralf Scheepers , who caused a sensation in the 80s and performed together with Metallica and Venom at the legendary Metal Hammer Festival 1985. Also performed: Primal Fear, Tyran 'Pace , Shiva ( Matt Sinner , Armin Sabol ), Bastards, My Darkest Hate , Runamok , Who Knows and Kaminari. The entire proceeds of 5300 euros were donated to terre des hommes for the reconstruction of traditional fishing villages on the Andaman coast in Thailand. The financial success as well as the positive feedback from the bands and visitors involved led to the decision to repeat the event.
  • In 2006 the festival could not take place for organizational reasons.
  • In 2007 there was no current media-relevant reference, so that the planning only provided for a somewhat smaller festival. Once again, however, well-known bands such as the cult death metal band My Darkest Hate and Chinchilla were won over for the event. The headliner was the well-known Judas Priest tribute band Just Priest , whose founding members are Ralf Scheepers and Ralf Schulz and who have earned an excellent reputation with performances all over Germany. Also performed: Just Priest, Chinchilla, My Darkest Hate, Saidian, Vinder, Gallon and Firereign. The entire proceeds were once again donated to terre des hommes, this time for a project to support displaced persons in Colombia.
  • In 2008 the purpose of the donation was rethought and it was decided to support local institutions. With the wild water e. V. Esslingen they found a project worth supporting, which takes care of the victims of sexual violence. The headliners were the internationally known metal band Sinner and the Swiss metal band The Order . The 90-year-old cult band Prolopower came together for a reunion for Rock for One World. There were also: Sinner, The Order, Prolopower, Headstone Epitaph , Targa and Mirror of Deception . Due to the greater response in the regional media, the high visitor numbers of 2005 have almost been reached again.
  • In 2009 it became clear that "Rock for One World" had already earned a very good reputation in the scene. The festival has now also found broader support. Tobias Regner with his Metallica tribute band Sacarium offered to perform at the ROW . - Likewise the rock orchestra Horst Müller. There was another unique reunion, this time by the band Insanity , the former band of the former Primal Fear guitarist Stefan Leibing. Also played: Sacarium, rock orchestra Horst Müller, Insanity, Vinder and Nighttrain. As in 2008, the “Wildwasser e. V. Esslingen ”.
  • In 2010, ROW took place on March 6th. With the 5th ROW, the youth and culture center Komma in Esslingen received direct support. Originally, Primal Fear was planned as the headliner of the benefit festival, as it was in 2005. However, Primal Fear had to cancel at short notice due to an acute illness of your singer Ralf Scheepers . Instead of Primal Fear, Sinner took the headlining position. As in 2008, the co-headliners were The Order from Switzerland. In addition, The New Black , Sacred Steel and Stereo.Pilot occurred. From the point of view of the organizers, the 5th Rock for One World Benefit Festival was a complete success. The sum of € 3368, - could be donated to the decimal point through the entrance fees alone, without including the beverage sales.
  • In 2011 the 6th ROW will take place on March 12th.
  • 2014 On March 1, 2014 it became known that Ralf Schulz, the founder of the ROW, died unexpectedly the previous night at the age of 49. The 9th ROW took place on March 8th.
