Rocky, the mohawk

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rocky (born November 26, 1926 in Berlin ; † January 4, 1987 in Hamburg ; real name: Gerhard Bauer; also known as: Rocky, the Iroquois ) was a German rocker who first appeared in the Hamburg city scene, later as a singer and member of the panic orchestra , but especially after his conversion to Christianity, gained national fame.

Life

Gerhard Bauer grew up in Berlin-Wedding . Because of his father's openly National Socialist attitude within a largely communist neighborhood, classmates distanced themselves from him. In 1943 he volunteered for military service , where he remained largely unaffected by the immediate combat events due to a position in the orderly with the officers. At the end of the war he was taken prisoner by the United States , from which he was released in 1946.

An early engagement followed and the birth of his first child. While he was unemployed, he began to work as an escape helper, which eventually led to a life sentence. He began tattooing his body in Bautzen prison .

When Bauer was pardoned in 1957, he found a private void. After the father had been shot in the war in 1945, the mother died shortly before his release. His former fiancée had been married to another man for four years. Bauer decided to train as a nurse and then worked in a facility for the severely disabled, but was dismissed in 1964 because of his tattoos. In response to protest, he had his face and entire body tattooed. He had most of his tattoos done by the Hamburg tattoo artist Heinrich Dietz . The changed appearance soon brought him into contact with the rocker scene . He subsequently joined a group and quickly rose to higher posts here. Due to the committing of various crimes, sometimes resulting in death, again in court, he received a relatively mild two-year suspended sentence.

In 1974 Bauer decided to turn away from the criminal milieu for good. He got in touch with the rockers' music scene through a friend. This is where Udo Lindenberg became aware of him. From 1976 to 1984, Bauer toured with Lindenberg's panic orchestra. In 1980 Telefunken released his first solo single Ich Such 'n Job , a cover version of the Tim Curry song I Do the Rock translated into German by Ulf Krüger . With this song he appeared on June 2nd, 1980 in the 112th disco with Ilja Richter . When he collapsed with Udo Lindenberg and the panic orchestra while recording the TV show Götterhämmerung , an examination was diagnosed with cancer. In order to cope with the fast-paced life in the music business and his painful illness, he slipped into heroin addiction. Udo Lindenberg stayed in contact with him and visited him at the bedside.

A year later, Bauer came into contact with Christianity through a Christian pantomime group. According to his own statements, he spent six hours in the Hamburg Jesus Center in conversation and prayer before he decided to convert to the faith. Bauer's radical change from the rocker scene to Christian circles quickly made him known there. In the few years up to his death in January 1987 he was invited to various Christian events as a guest speaker. Under the title Rocky - The man with the mask made of R. Brockhaus publishing in 1987 its been signed by Michael Ackermann biography out, also appeared in the ERF publishing the audio cassette of the same name. Shortly before his death, he recorded an interview with Günther Klempnauer.
