Roger Borniche (born June 7, 1919 in Vineuil-Saint-Firmin , Département Oise ; † June 16, 2020 in Cannes , Département Alpes-Maritimes ) was a French writer .

Life

Roger Borniche, who originally wanted to become a chanson singer, went to the police during the German occupation of France in World War II in order to avoid the labor service in National Socialist Germany ( service de travail obligatoire ), but left the police again because he was not the Vichy- Regime wanted to serve. After the liberation of France in 1944, he reported again and went as an inspector to the Sûreté nationale , where he arrested 567 wanted felons. Borniche knew how to claim success for himself and worked well with the media. Nevertheless, he is considered a police officer who achieved great success with extraordinary methods and was awarded the Médaille d'Honneur de la Police and the Médaille des Actes de Courage à titre exceptionnel . This does not seem to have been particularly beneficial to his career, which apparently attracted envious people and finally ended under unclear circumstances.

After retiring from the police force in 1956, Roger Borniche received a state license as a private detective and opened an agency in Paris that specialized in investigating insurance fraud and which still exists today.

Since the early 1970s, he has published numerous crime novels, most of which reproduced cases from his own professional practice. However, he did not claim to provide documentation or factual reports, but rather described his works as detective novels and made corresponding legal reservations regarding persons and names in his forewords. Nonetheless, there were violent reactions from former colleagues and superiors who accused Borniche of vanity and boasting. He claims that the team's search successes are unjustifiably only for himself.

Due to the great success of his books, Roger Borniche retired from his previous work in 1975 and handed over the management of the agency to his son Christian. His books have been translated into numerous languages, some of which have also been made into films. Borniche moved to the USA and devoted himself only to his writing activities. In 2003 he lived in West Hollywood with his wife .

Works

The books, which are available in German translation, address the topic in realistic and ironically distant language and the like. a. Black market , collaboration ( French militia ) and Resistance in Germany-occupied France , the situation in France of the Fourth Republic (1946–1958) with war profiteers , corruption , housing misery, gang crime and a police apparatus weakened by political cleansing and intrigues . The hero is the ambitious young inspector Borniche, who, in addition to dealing with gangsters with the bureaucracy , the rivalries between the various police apparatus and his career-obsessed superiors, also deals with the adversities of everyday life (long working hours, often unsuccessful observations in bad weather for hours and days) Housing conditions, low salary, preparation for exams). He detests the often brutal methods of his colleagues, never carries a weapon and relies more on his intuition , on his informants and the knowledge of the underworld in the police archives . With these means he succeeds in making spectacular arrests.
