Roger Janotta , also Jannotta (born November 29, 1943 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American woodwind player (including oboe , flute ) who is active both as a composer and as an interpreter in the field of contemporary jazz.

Live and act

Janotta studied first at the University of New Mexico (Bachelor 1965), then at the New England Conservatory in Boston (Master 1976); at Berklee College of Music he was a lecturer. He has lived in Munich since 1978, where he became a member of the experimental group Between around Peter Michael Hamel ( Stille über der Zeit , 1980). In 1979 he performed with the Unique Munich Saxophone Choir ( Roman Schwaller , Frank St. Peter , Leszek Zadlo , Erica Lindsay , Thomas Faist and Joe Nay ) at the Donaueschinger Musiktage . He also worked with Tom van der Geld's Children at Play and was also involved in his solo album Path . Since the early 1990s he has been a member of Carla Bley's big band (including at the JazzFest Berlin in 1990 ). He also worked with Michael Mantler ( School of Understanding , Hide and Seek ) and with Thorsten Klentze . He also played improvisation music with the Munich ICI Ensemble , which also performs his compositions. Since 2007 he has led the Passau Jazz Orchestra .

As a theater musician he composed for Dieter Dorn at the Münchner Kammerspiele for many years ; in addition, he worked as a radio play composer for Bavarian Radio . He also arranged sheet metal damage for the hr big band and the Munich big band . In 1999 he became arranger of the musical course at the Bavarian Theater Academy ; he also teaches at the Neue Jazzschool in Munich.
