Roger of Salerno or Roger of the Principal († June 28, 1119 near Sarmada ) from the House of Hauteville was regent of the Principality of Antioch from 1112 to 1119.

He was the son of Richard of the Principate and relative of Tankred of Tiberias , both grandsons of Tankred of Hauteville and a participant in the First Crusade . After Tancred's death in 1112 he became regent of Antioch, as the designated successor Bohemund was a child. Like Tankred, Roger was almost incessantly at war with the nearby Muslim states such as Aleppo . In 1114 an earthquake caused widespread destruction in the principality, so that in the following years he was busy rebuilding the fortifications near the border.

Roger defeated two armies of the Seljuk sultan Muhammad I. Tapar under the general Bursuq of Hamadan in the battle of Sarmin (1114) and in the battle of Tell Danith (1115). Allied with Joscelin I of Edessa he held so much pressure on Aleppo that the city was in 1118 with the Ortokiden - Emir Ilghazi allied. When Ilghazi invaded the principality in 1119, Roger opposed him with only 700 knights and 3,000 foot soldiers, without waiting for reinforcements from the Kingdom of Jerusalem and the County of Tripoli . In the following battle of Ager Sanguinis , the principality's contingent was almost completely wiped out, and Roger was also killed. Ilghazi's troops sacked the area after the battle, but did not attack Antioch itself. Baldwin II of Jerusalem came to the north and took over the reign of the principality.

His chancellor Walter documented Roger's government in a chronicle.

After 1114 Roger married Hodierna von Rethel, the widow of Heribrand III. , Herr von Hierges, and daughter of Hugo I., Count von Rethel . The marriage remained childless.
