Roland Ertl (officer)

Roland Hans Ertl (born July 23, 1945 in Bad Hall , Upper Austria ) is an Austrian soldier. He was Chief of the General Staff and thus the highest ranking officer in the Austrian Armed Forces .

Life

After training as an officer, Ertl began his military career as a platoon and company commander in a training regiment in Salzburg . After deployments abroad on the Golan and in Damascus , he completed the general staff course from 1979 to 1982. In the 1980s he received his military training in the USA , from 1982 to 1992 he worked in the replenishment department of the Federal Ministry of Defense . From 1993 Ertl was a military advisor at the UN in New York , and in 2000 he became the commandant of the Salzburg military command. He was followed in December 2002 by Paul Kritsch . From December 1, 2002 until his retirement on November 30, 2007, Roland Ertl was Chief of the General Staff. On October 21, 2005, he was appointed Commander of the French Legion of Honor in Paris by the French Chief of Staff, General Henri Bentégeat . He is an honorary member of the Austrian Army Sports Association (ÖHSV).
