Rome temple
The Rome Temple is a temple belonging to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Rome .
history

On October 4, 2008, President Thomas S. Monson announced in general conference that the Mormons would build a temple in Rome . The religious community bought the building site in the late 1990s. The temple serves members in Greece , Cyprus , Slovenia , Bosnia and Herzegovina, and North Macedonia, as well as the more than 22,000 members of the Church in Italy .
In preparation for the construction and as part of the approval process, as with every property in Rome, a soil archaeological investigation was carried out. After no ruins were found, the building application was approved. The groundbreaking ceremony was held by Thomas S. Monson on October 23, 2010. Since only invited guests were allowed to attend, the ceremony was broadcast to all Mormon meetinghouses in Italy the following day. Among the guests of honor was Erich Kopischke , President of the Europe Area of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The temple was completed in January 2019 and was open to the public until February 16, 2019. Russell M. Nelson dedicated the temple on March 10, 2019 .
location
The temple stands with three floors on a six hectare site with a usable area of 3700 m² near the A90 autostrada .
The temple also has a community center, visitor center, gardens, and a family history center. The visitor center houses a copy of the Christ statue by Bertel Thorvaldsen .
criticism
Cardinal Elio Sgreccia complained about the temple because it was a hindrance to ecumenism , but was pleased about the many jobs that had been created by the temple. Archbishop Gianfranco Girotti, on the other hand, welcomed the construction of the temple and hopes for a dialogue with the Mormons.
