Elio Cardinal Sgreccia (born June 6, 1928 in Arcevia , Marche , Italy ; † June 5, 2019 in Rome ) was a Roman Catholic theologian and bioethicist . He was Cardinal Curia of the Roman Catholic Church and head of the Pontifical Academy for Life .

Life

Elio Sgreccia was ordained a priest on June 29, 1952 after his theological training . He graduated from the University of Bologna with a degree in literature and philosophy in 1963 . From 1954 to 1972 he was Vice Rector, Professor and Rector of the Diocesan Seminary of Marken. On November 24, 1972, Pope Paul VI awarded him . the title of Honorary Prelate to His Holiness . From 1972 to 1973 he was vicar general of the diocese of Fossombrone. From 1974 to 1984 he was chaplain at the Medical Faculty of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (UCSC) in Rome, from 1984 he was responsible for teaching bioethics.

In 1990 he became professor for bioethics at UCSC and from 1992 to 2000 director of the Institute for Bioethics. From 1985 to 2006 he was also director of the Center for Bioethics at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore and from 1998 to 2005 director of the Center for International Cooperation there.

From 1990 to 2006 he was a member of the Italian National Bioethics Committee. In 2001 he was appointed to the state commission for the development of guidelines for biomedicine and genetics . Since 2003 he has been President of the International Federation of Person-Oriented Bioethical Institutes (FIBIP) based in Rome. Since 2004 he has been chairman of the Ut Vitam Habeant Foundation . Since 2004 he has been president of donum vitae in the Diocese of Rome .

Sgreccia was the author of a Catholic manual on bioethics. Together with William Levada and Luis Ladaria he was the author of the document “ Dignitas personae ” (Dignity of the Person).

Episcopate

In 1992 John Paul II appointed him Titular Bishop of Zama Minor and Secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Family . He was ordained bishop on January 6, 1993 by Pope John Paul II himself; Co- consecrators were the Curia Archbishops and later Cardinals Giovanni Battista Re and Justin Francis Rigali . He held the office of secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Family until 1996. In 2005 he was named President of the Pontifical Academy for Life . 2008 was his age-related resignation by Pope Benedict XVI. granted.
