Romeo × Juliet ( Japanese ロ ミ オ × ジ ュ リ エ ッ ト , Romio to Jurietto ) is an anime television series by Studio Gonzo from 2007. The plot is based on the drama Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare , but takes place in a fantasy world.

action

The floating city of Neo Verona is ruled by the Grand Duke Leontes Montague, who had taken control of the city through the murder of Duke Capulet and his family. Romeo is the son of the Grand Duke; when he happens to meet the young Juliet, he immediately falls in love with her. Unbeknownst to Romeo, this is the only surviving Capulet and disguised as a “red whirlwind” fights against the power of the nobility and for that of the people. As her 16th birthday approaches, she learns more and more about her origins and wants to take action against the Duke all the more for the people.

She gathers her followers around her. However, they are revealed during a secret meeting. Juliet flees and is brought to a safe hiding place by Tybalt, Romeo's big half-brother. But she doesn't want to stay there and wanders around for hours in the rain until she collapses and is found by Romeo's mother Porzia. This brings her to the monastery, to which she fled when she realized that her husband was a ruthless, power-hungry murderer. Porzia looks after Juliet and has Romeo summoned. This shows Juliet after her recovery that he would do anything for her.

Now united the two decide to run away. They wander around like ordinary people, find a small, uninhabited village, settle there and "get married" by swearing to each other through heaven and hell and sharing every burden. So they live happily for a while. One day when they are looking for food and wood again, they come to a dilapidated ruin that contains a huge tree. Juliet feels a connection with this tree, but doesn't know why, and leaves the place. On their way back, the two meet a hiker who tells them that the next village is being attacked by the king's guard and some soldiers in order to find Princess Juliet and the prince's son.

Romeo and Juliet bravely face the guards, but are captured and brought back to Neo Verona. Juliet is supposed to be publicly executed, but before that she is freed by her friends and Romeo. Because of the offense and treason to the court and father, he was sent to the mines of Gradisca as punishment, where he soon joined forces with the people who lived there. After the mines collapse, Romeo and his new friends try to build a home in a nearby village where he and Juliet used to be. However, this does not succeed because the seeds that they grow do not want to ripen because the soil is sterile. Juliet and her entourage plan to use a play to convince the citizens that Montague is a bad ruler and that the Red Whirlwind should come to power. They succeed in this endeavor, now they have the population on their side and go into battle. Romeo follows her, desperately trying one last time to convince his father to leave. However, he refuses and fights to the bitter end. He lets his Neo Verona, which is now falling apart like everything else, burn. Juliet, who has now got up to him, stands in the way of the fact that she doesn't want to kill Montague. She forgives him and pretends to want to build a new Verona with him. But inside she knows that she has to sacrifice herself, because Neo Verona and the whole country is supported by a huge tree. In order for it to survive, however, it needs a new seed, this is always reborn in a Capulet daughter, and since the Capulets were the ruling family until 14 years ago, this was not a problem. However, Montague had all but Juliet killed, so she has to sacrifice herself now so that her world is preserved.

After initially being puzzled, Romeo also notices that Juliet now needs him most, and follows her deep into the palace to the tree. He finds her and agrees to share this burden with her. But she doesn't want to, and begins to fight with Romeo. Romeo wins this fight, but can't stop them from getting to the tree. Another fight breaks out between Romeo, Juliet's friends and the tree Eskarus. Romeo manages to get to the captured Juliet. Juliet wakes up from his calls and almost breaks the spell of the tree. Escarus attacks Romeo and kills him. Juliet has to see this. Now she realizes that this was her fate - always has been. She takes Romeo in her arms, sacrifices herself and saves everyone on the island by using her wings to propel the island into the sea below.

At the point where they died arm in arm, a memorial will be preserved for all eternity. As good Willi says at the end: “The struggle, the hatred, the sadness, the pain, but love has triumphed, because the highest virtue lies in following love and only love. Because love is the germ of creation, you both taught us that, ”it will always be.
