Ronald Michael "Ron" Sega (born December 4, 1952 in Cleveland , Ohio ) is a former American astronaut .
Sega received a bachelor's degree in math and physics from the United States Air Force Academy in 1974 and a master's in physics from Ohio State University in 1975 . In 1982 he received a PhD in electrical engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder .
In 1976 Sega received his pilot's license from the United States Air Force and worked as a pilot instructor at Williams Air Force Base until 1979 . In 1982 he became a professor at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs . In between he was a researcher at the Air Force Academy and the University of Houston , where he helped develop the Wake Shield Facility at the Space Vacuum Epitaxy Center . This later flew into space on a total of three space shuttle missions.
Astronaut activity
In January 1990, Sega was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA. From November 1994 to March 1995 Sega was Director of Operations at NASA at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Svyosdny Gorodok near Moscow.
STS-60
On February 3, 1994, Sega launched into space for the first time as a mission specialist on the space shuttle Discovery . A special feature of this flight was that Sergei Krikaljow was the first Russian spaceman to fly an American spaceship. The Wake Shield Facility and the Spacehab module were the main payloads on board.
STS-76
On March 22, 1996 Sega took off as payload commander with the space shuttle Atlantis to the Russian space station Mir . On the third rendezvous mission, the astronaut Shannon Lucid was brought to the Mir space station. In addition, supplies, equipment and experimental material were delivered, various devices were installed outboard of the station and technological and biological experiments were carried out in the Spacehab .

After leaving NASA in July 1996, Sega returned to the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. In 2001, he became Assistant Secretary of Defense for Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological Programs. In August 2001, he was appointed Director of Defense Research and Engineering in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. From August 2005 to August 2007, he was the successor of Peter B. Teets Deputy Air Force Secretary ( Under Secretary of the Air Force ). He is currently Professor of Systems Engineering at Colorado State University and Vice President of Applied Research for the Colorado State University Research Foundation (CSURF).
Private
Ronald Sega was married to former astronaut Bonnie Dunbar and has two children.
