biography

Tekal studied medicine at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate in general medicine in 1995. He has been a general practitioner since 2000. He lives in Mauerbach near Vienna.

While still a student he composed singing games for school classes, as well as the Musical Hospital , which premiered in Vienna in 1992. This was followed by compositions for musicals by the children's theater group Die Stachelbären at the Vienna Theater am Alsergrund, under the direction of Andreas Hutter, as well as for the play Coccinella by the Theater Impetus .

Medicine cabaret

In 1995 he founded the cabaret duo Peter & Teutscher together with the communication scientist Norbert Peter . Since 2006, the formation has concentrated exclusively on medical topics and has chosen the term medical cabaret for this. Similar to the German doctors and cabaret artists Eckart von Hirschhausen , Lüder Wohlenberg or Ludger Stratmann , the satirical examination of doctors, patients and the medical system is the focus of the works. There are also elements of the seminar cabaret created by the Austrian psychologist Bernhard Ludwig .

In 2000 they won the audience rating as the best Austrian participant at the Vienna Golden Cabaret , and twice they received the Munich Cabaret Kaktus . In 2013 the name of the cabaret duo was changed to Peter & Tekal .

A portrait of the artists with excerpts from their programs was shown several times in 2001 on ORF and 3sat , and the affair program was also shown on Premiere Austria. In 2013, ORF III was followed by the broadcast of the Patient Whisperer program as part of the Hyundai Cabaret Days . In 2016 he was sick with Echt! to be seen in the context of cabaret in the tower on ORF.

Tekal is an employee of the ORF radio science department, author, speaker and designer of contributions for Ö1 , especially for the Ö1 radio doctor.

Since 2008 his satirical column Side Effects has been published weekly by the Doctors Week ( Springer-Verlag ).

Commitment to sudden cardiac death

As a founding member of PULS - Association for Combating Sudden Cardiac Death , Tekal headed the organization between 2008 and 2013. During this time, in addition to major first aid events in Vienna, the first publicly accessible defibrillators for lay people (AED) were installed as part of this initiative. The goal of making Vienna heart safe was implemented together with the City of Vienna and the major rescue organizations. In 2013 there were over 300 defibrillators registered at underground stations, in shopping centers, at the airport, in public buildings or in police stations in the Defi network in Vienna. At the 4th German Interdisciplinary Emergency Medicine Congress 2013, the presentation of the PULS campaign Vienna is HERZSAFE was awarded first place.

Together with the second PULS founder, emergency physician Roman Fleischhackl, Tekal received the Vienna City Government's 2013 Helfer-Wiens-Preis .
