Roque Alberto Avallay (born December 14, 1945 in San Rafael ) is a former Argentine football player. The greatest successes of his career were winning the Copa Libertadores in 1965 with CA Independiente and the 1973 championship with CA Huracán.
Career
Roque Avallay began his football career in the youth of Deportivo Maipú in his home province of Mendoza . From there he moved to the top club CA Independiente in Avellaneda in front of the gates of Buenos Aires in early 1965 . Avallay immediately developed into a regular player in the team of coach Manuel Giudice . As a regular, he experienced great success in his first year. After winning the semi-finals against Boca Juniors , Independiente was in the final of the Copa Libertadores , the most important football competition for club teams in South America, for the second time in a row . There the opponent was called CA Peñarol from Uruguay's capital Montevideo . After winning the first leg 1-0 at home, Peñarol won the second leg 3-1 and would have won by today's rules. At that time, however, the goal difference did not count, which made a decision game necessary. As in the first two finals, Roque Avallay was used over the entire distance, Independiente won 4-1 in the end. Avallay contributed the goal to the meanwhile 3-0 in the 33rd minute. A little later, Roque Avallay still played for the World Cup with CA Independiente , but was clearly defeated by Inter Milan .
Roque Avallay only played for Independiente Avellaneda in 1965, making twenty league games with five goals during that time. He then spent four years with Newell's Old Boys . There he made 145 league games with 51 goals, but there were no major successes.
After joining the Newell's Old Boys, Roque Avallay joined CA Huracán in 1970 . He then played for the Bonaren club until 1975 and was part of the most successful team in the history of the Huracán club. Under the later world champion coach César Luis Menotti and with players like Carlos Babington , René Houseman and Miguel Brindisi , the club took first place in the Torneo Metropolitano of the Primera División in 1973 with a lead of four points over the Boca Juniors. This represented the greatest success in the history of Huracán to date and is to be regarded as such to this day. Huracán has not been champion again since 1973, and it was only in 2014 that he won the cup for the first time. But Huracán's style was much more decisive for the development of Argentine football. Menotti's tactical concept of "left football" later became the basis for winning the 1978 football World Cup in his own country. Most of Roque Avallay's internationals also fall during his time at Huracán. Between 1968 and 1974 he was featured on the national team fifteen times, where he scored a goal.
After six years at CA Huracán, Roque Avallay joined Club Atlético Atlanta for one year in 1976 , followed by a year-long interlude with the Chacarita Juniors . From 1977 to 1978, the attacker was then active for the Racing Club and after the end of this phase he returned to CA Huracán at the Estadio Tomás Adolfo Ducó for one and a half seasons . In 1980 Roque Avallay ended his footballing career at the age of 35. With 184 goals in 522 league games, he is still in 14th place in the statistics of the top scorers in the Argentine Primera División . After his active career, he worked for many years in the youth division of CA Huracán.
