history

Although the church can be assigned to the 12th century, the first written mention of the place name Manauria comes from the end of the 14th century. The Manoir de Roucaudou was built in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a high of 450 in the middle of the 19th century. In the following period, the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the loss of jobs due to the mechanization of agriculture led to a continuous decline in population, which kept the number of inhabitants short Recovery phases dropped to around 140 residents by the 1990s. At the turn of the millennium, a phase of moderate growth began, which has recently shown a negative trend again.

Attractions

Manoir de Roucaudou
  • The single-nave Romanesque parish church of Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens with its bell gable dates from the 12th century, but it was redesigned in simple Gothic forms after the end of the Hundred Years War (1337–1453) ; it received larger windows, a new west portal and a large chapel extension on the south side. The small apse has a flat end.
  • The little Renaissance castle ( Manoir de Roucaudou ) standing outside the village has a round stair tower on the north side and a south-facing residential wing ( corps de logis ) with cross-storey windows . An older tower ( donjon ) is in the immediate vicinity. The building complex was recognized as a monument historique in 1974 and is now used as a country hotel.
  • Near the border with the neighboring community of Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil there are several rock overhangs ( abris ), under which prehistoric people probably sought protection; later houses were built here.

economy

Up to the present day agriculture plays the biggest role in the economic life of the municipality. However, the viticulture practiced here was completely given up after the phylloxera crisis . Tobacco and corn are also on the decline - instead, forests, fields and pastures, but also walnut , chestnut and fruit trees dominate the area. Also, foie gras and truffles are among the best regional cuisine. Some vacant houses are rented out as holiday apartments ( gîtes ).
