Album history

Rory Gallagher was the frontman (guitar and vocals) of the band Taste from 1966 , together with bassist Richard McCracken and drummer John Wilson. With this formation he performed a. a. performed at the Isle of Wight Festival in the summer of 1970 . After a concert on New Year's Eve 1970 in Belfast Queen’s University , Gallagher decided to leave the band.

In spring 1971 Gallagher contacted the Belfast bassist Gerry McAvoy . Together with the drummer Wilgar Campbell, whom McAvoy knew from the music scene in his Northern Irish hometown, Gallagher recorded the debut album "Rory Gallagher" in the Advision Studios in London . Keyboardist Vincent Crane from the Atomic Rooster formation played on the album's Wave Myself Goodbye and I'm Not Surprised tracks . All songs were recorded live.

The album contains ten songs that were rehearsed in a rehearsal room in the basement of a music shop in the London borough of Fulham until the studio appointment . The opener Laundromat with its distinctive blues rock riff was only introduced by Gallagher towards the end of the recording sessions. This song later became one of the Irishman's most famous songs alongside Hands Up and Sinner Boy , which was already a live version on the Taste album Live At The Isle Of Wight .

In 1990, digitally remastered CD editions were released. These include the Muddy Waters classic Gypsy Woman and Otis Rush's It Takes Time as bonus tracks, two previously published titles from the 1971 studio sessions. Gallagher recorded more songs with Muddy Waters on his album London Muddy Waters Sessions that year .
