Rosemary Dorothy Moravec , b. Rosemary Dorothy Hill , married Rosemary Hilmar (born July 24, 1946 in Cardiff ; † January 16, 2013 in Mödling ) was a British-Austrian musicologist , author and composer .

family

Rosemary Hill's father was a senior officer of the War Damage Commission and holder of the Order of the British Empire , presented by George VI in 1950 . (United Kingdom) . As a child she learned alongside English and Welsh (Cymrag) . At a young age she got to know South Devon, the area around her homeland.

job

Moravec studied philosophy, Latin, French and German at the University of Leicester . She graduated from St Anne's College in Oxford with a Bachelor of Letters. Learned musical instruments were violin , guitar , harpsichord , autoharp and piano . The majority of the professors were former emigrants from Austria, including the musicologist Egon Wellesz .

From 1970 Moravec stayed for the first time in Vienna because of studies for her thesis for Oxford . Vienna and especially the Austrian National Library later became the professional center of their activities. She also taught English in an evening school on the side.

Bruno Kreisky temporarily used her services to prepare lectures on foreign policy in English. The following statement from Bruno Kreisky has been handed down through them: "Everyone has the right to an apartment and work from which one can live in order to be able to participate in cultural life." The "WC beyond the Ganges" (WC for several house parties) should no longer be the rule. The doctoral thesis at the University of Vienna (1972) dealt with the composer Alban Berg (published by Böhlau Verlag 1978).

In 1978 Moravec worked for one year as a lecturer at the University of Manchester . From 1979 she lived in the "Schönberg Haus" in Mödling. In addition to her work in the Austrian National Library (according to her statement: “Viennese archives .... quite a number of Renaissance and late Medieval church music and Baroque suites”) she dealt with the Viennese Modernism and New Vienna School and visited Austrian musicians in California, according to Alexander von Zemlinsky's widow .

Various museums, such as B. the Jewish Museum in Vienna, she was helpful with exhibitions. A list of the musicians' letters in the collection in the National Library was created with key words. This task was funded only up to the beginning of the letter S. In the pension she wanted to deal with the music teacher, composer and conductor Herbert Zipper . So she wanted to view and scientifically edit film material that is stored in Vienna about Zipper. In the film about Jura Soyfer , The Shadow is Long , you can find several film clips about Zipper.

Personal

Moravec volunteered to teach Romanian children in German and English in Austria. Very often she used the book Animal Farm by George Orwell . She made it possible for her adopted daughter to study music.
