The 1997 South American Basketball Championship for women , the twenty-fifth South American Basketball Championship for women , took place between May 10 and 17, 1997 in Iquique , Chile , which hosted the championship for the fifth time. The winner was the Brazilian team , which was unbeaten for the sixteenth time, for the sixth time in a row, at the South American Women's Championship.
In the preliminary round there were two groups of five (Group A) and four (Group B) teams. Each team played against each other exactly once, so that each team played exactly four (Group A) or three (Group B) games (a total of sixteen games were played). There were two points for each win and one point for a defeat. The two best teams in each group advanced to the final round, in which places one to four were played out in a final group phase. The third and fourth placed in each group played in placement games for places five to eight. Paraguay, being the bottom of the group in Group A, was automatically last of the tournament.
