The 1953 South American Basketball Championship , the fifteenth South American Basketball Championship , took place between May 4 and 19, 1953 in Montevideo , Uruguay , which was the third time the championship was held. The winner was the Uruguayan national team , which won the title for the sixth time, for the third time in a row. For the first time, seven teams took part in the tournament.
Each team played against each opponent once, so that each team had to play six games (a total of 21 games). There were two points for each win and one point for a defeat. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided. Only if there was a tie for first place would there have been a decisive final game.
