The winner was the national team of Brazil , which won the title for the ninth time, for the second time in a row.
Each team played against each opponent once, so that each team played seven games (a total of 28 games took place). There were two points for each win and one point for a defeat. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided. The tie on points between Uruguay, Chile and Colombia was resolved by the basket ratio in relation to these three games, as Uruguay won against Colombia, Colombia against Chile and Chile against Uruguay. The team with the most points became South American champions in 1973.
