The 1999 South American Basketball Championship , the thirty-eighth South American Basketball Championship , took place between June 14 and 20, 1999 in Bahía Blanca , Argentina , where the championship was held for the sixth time. The winner was the national team of Brazil , which won the title for the fifteenth time.

Preliminary round

In the preliminary round, ten teams played in two groups of five teams each. Each team played against the other teams once, so that each team played four games (a total of twenty games took place). There were two points for each win and one point for a defeat. The two best teams in each group made it to the semi-finals. The other three teams played in each group played against the tied for the other group for position five to ten.
