The 1955 South American Basketball Championship , the sixteenth South American Basketball Championship , took place between August 13 and 31, 1955 in Cúcuta , Colombia , which hosted the championship for the first time. The winner was the Uruguayan national team , which won the title for the seventh time, for the fourth time in a row. For the first time, a record nine teams, including the Venezuelan national team , took part in the tournament.
There were two points for each win and one for each defeat. In the event of a tie, the basket ratio decided. Twelve games were played in the preliminary round.
In the final round, each team played against the other, so that each team played three games (six games in total). The team with the most points, in the event of a tie, decided the basket ratio, became South American champions in 1955.
