The 1971 South American Basketball Championship , the twenty-fourth South American Basketball Championship , was held between March 18 and March 30, 1971 in Montevideo , Uruguay , hosting the championship for the fifth time, for the second time in a row. The winner was the national team of Brazil , which won the title for the eighth time.
Each team played against each opponent once, so that each team played seven games (a total of 28 games took place). There were two points for each win and one point for a defeat. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided. The team with the most points became South American champions in 1971.
