The 1977 South American Basketball Championship for women , the sixteenth South American Basketball Championship for women , was held between March 13 and 24, 1977 in Lima , Peru , which hosted the championship for the fourth time. The winner was the host who won the South American Women's Championship for the first time. It was the first time since 1962 and six championships in a row that a team other than Brazil won the title.

The game was played in the form of a round-robin tournament with eight teams. Each team played against each other exactly once, so that each team played six games (a total of 28 games were played). There were two points for each win and one point for a defeat. The team with the highest points was the South American women's basketball champions in 1977. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided . Since three teams were tied with Ecuador, Colombia and Paraguay, the basket ratio decided in this case.
