The 2006 South American Basketball Championship , the forty-second South American Basketball Championship , was held between July 12 and 16, 2006 in Caracas , Venezuela , which was the third time the championship was held. The winner was the Brazilian national team , which won the title for the seventeenth time.

Preliminary round

In the preliminary round, three teams played in one group, so that the semi-final participants were determined in two groups. Each team played against each other in their group exactly once (a total of three games per group took place). There were two points for each win and one point for a defeat. The first placed in one group played against the second placed in the other group. The winners competed in the final and the losers in the game for third place. The last two in the group played for fifth place.
