The 1956 South American Basketball Championship for women , the sixth South American Basketball Championship for women , took place between August 4 and 21, 1956 in Quito , Ecuador , which hosted the championship for the first time. The winner was Chile , which won the South American Women's Championship for the third time.
The game was played in the form of a round-robin tournament with seven teams. Each team played against each other exactly once, so that each team played six games (a total of 21 games were played). There were two points for each win and one point for a defeat. The team with the best points was the South American women's basketball champions in 1956.
