Rose gardens in Rapperswil is a collective name for the public and private rose arias in the old town of Rapperswil , a district of the Swiss municipality of Rapperswil-Jona in the canton of St. Gallen .

history

City fortifications of Rapperswil, shortly before its demolition, around 1831, with the gardens on the city moat at today's Obere Bahnhofstrasse

There is no documentary evidence of when the first rose gardens were created in the old town of Rapperswil . The city coat of arms shows two red roses with red calyx tips on a silver background and is modeled on the three rose coat of arms of the Rapperswil residents. Presumably, therefore, the cultivation of roses within the city walls goes back to a long tradition. When the medieval city fortifications were razed in the 1830s, numerous gardens were laid out in the filled city moat on today's Obere Bahnhofstrasse. The gardens have largely been preserved and supplemented by the fragrant rose garden for the visually impaired, which was created in 1984.

In 1913, the "Verkehrs- und Schönerungsverein Rapperswil und Umgebung" had the rose plants set up on the Fischmarktplatz as well as additional plantings in the early 1920s in the harbor area between Fischmarktplatz and Curti-Haus and on streets and squares, if this was still possible in the densely built Rapperswil old town. “ More roses in the city of roses so that the city of roses becomes a real city of roses ” was the motto of the Rapperswil Tourist Office in 1958. Rose gardens in the city's ownership followed in 1965, at the Einsiedlerhaus and on the Schlossberg , on the initiative of the Tourist Association or Dietrich Woessener, founder and Honorary President of the Society of Swiss Rose Friends . He is said to have selected the rose varieties and planted most of the roses himself. The Curti family provided the tourist office with a piece of land near Haus Schlossberg for a modest rent to build a rose garden. On the Lindenhof, between the castle and the Polish Freedom Column, as well as on the See-Quai at the Curti-Haus, there are two further, smaller urban plantings.

Private rose gardens

In the old town of Rapperswil, roses are cultivated, especially in the area around the former Burggasse with the residences of the servants of the Counts of Rapperswil, such as the Bleulerhaus from the 13th century. In the densely built-up old town, especially in the oldest part west of the main square , it has been difficult to find more space for rose plants since the 1960s. This is especially thanks to the female residents of the Rose City, who committed themselves to the planting of the private facilities.

City rose gardens

The “official” municipal rose garden is located on Schlossberg , as the southern side of the Lindenhof is called. The garden is divided into two areas by the Endingerstrasse running to the Endingerturm, so that the smaller part of the plants at the hermit's house is separated by a wall. A cross-national specialty is the scented rose garden for the visually impaired on the underground parking garage Schanz on Oberen Bahnhofstrasse, between the town hall and Engelplatz .

The property on Schlossberg, made available by the Curti family in 1965, contains around 3000 plants of 150 varieties. Polyantha roses were planted in the northern part and flower beds ( tea hybrids ) in the middle . The costs for the design of this first urban rose garden were borne by the so-called Rosentaler Fund , the roses were a gift from the women of Rapperswil . The fountain consists of an earlier memorial stone for August Baumann, the creator of the first rose plants in Rapperswil, the bronze bonnet foot is the work of the sculptor Ernst Ghenzi, the work was financed by Circus Knie . The inscription on the sandstone comes from the poet Pius Rickenmann. The wrought-iron gate is on loan from the Rapperswil-Jona municipality, a former exhibit from the Rapperswil-Jona City Museum .

Hermit house

In 1974, the Schlossberg rose garden was expanded to include a second garden at the Einsiedlerhaus and Endingertor . Divided into four large beds by a wayside cross, the smaller of the two gardens is lined with borders on all four sides. The planting was done in advance with older bed roses and some standard roses . The fountain in the garden is a donation from neighboring communities for the 750th anniversary of the Rose City; an old fountain bowl made of Jura limestone, artfully restored and redesigned.

Fragrant rose garden

Based on an idea by Hans Rathgeb, the contract was awarded by the Rapperswil-Jona tourist office. On October 20, 1984 75 volunteers planted 1664 rose bushes of 58 different scented varieties. Three plots were made available by two private donors and two companies. 33 types of bush roses, 20 climbing roses and 6 shrub roses, which exude a particularly intense fragrance, were selected. Hans Erni created an ornamental fountain designed for the visually impaired, financed by Circus Knie . The city administration is responsible for the maintenance of the scented rose garden. The approximately 1522 roses from 75 types of fragrance are marked with Braille and normal writing throughout .

Rose town of Rapperswil

Fragrant roses bloom earlier in Rapperswil-Jona than in most other rose gardens in Switzerland. Thanks to the heated underground car park, the scented rose garden experiences practically no winter and little frost. The fragrant roses bloom as early as May, in the other gardens in June. The first blooming roses can be found on Herrenberg and the sun-drenched sandstone walls of the parish church and the Breny Tower .

In July 1999, at the anniversary rose festival in Nöggenschwiel in the southern Black Forest , Rapperswil was recognized as the international “ center of scented roses ”. Between June and October a total of around 15,000 blooming  hybrid teas , Polyantha and shrub roses in the gardens and streets in and around the Old Town, which is why Rapperswil to Rose City may call.
