development

The Rotax 185 was developed for use in fire service pumps. The rights to the construction were sold by Rotax to the Wildfire Group (now part of the Waterax Corporation), which uses it in their Mark 3 pump .

Because of its original purpose as a water pump, the engine is reliable enough for use in microlight aircraft. It is used as a replacement for Pioneer's 5.5 HP chainsaw motors in the twin-engine Ultraflight Lazair . The Rotax 185 delivers enough power to allow the Lazair to be used on swimmers .
