The red violet bush ( Iochroma fuchsioides ), also called yas tree or paguando , is a South American plant species from the genus of violet bushes ( Iochroma ) in the nightshade family (Solanaceae).

description

The red violet bush is a hairless or almost hairless shrub . The leaves are often in clusters, inverted ovoid or tend to be oval or elongated. They are clearly blunted towards the front, at the base they run over into a short petiole . The leaf margin is entire.

The flowers appear in groups in the armpits, outside the armpits or also terminally, the flower stalks are shorter than the leaves. The flowers themselves are pendulous. The chalice is almost bell-shaped, with five teeth. Often it has burst on one or two sides, causing a crack or dividing the cup into two unequal parts. The crown is three times as long as the calyx and is orange-red in color. The elongated corolla tube is almost straight. It is set with a slightly splayed crown hem that is five-toothed or five-angled. There is a smaller tooth between the teeth or angles.

The stamens are fused with this near the crown base. The stamens do not protrude beyond the crown and are downy hairy at the base. The ovary is pyramidal and indistinct fivefold. The stylus is as long as the crown, the scar is head-shaped.

The fruits are egg-shaped, pointed berries , some of which are surrounded by the splayed calyx.

distribution

The violet bush occurs in South America in the highlands of the Andes , in Chile , Colombia and Peru .

meaning

In South America the plant was used for ethnobotanical , medicinal and spiritual purposes, but mostly only when no other medicine was available or when particularly strong visions were to be evoked. The effects of the plant can be very strong and unpleasant, with after-effects lasting for several days.
