The Rothebach is a creek about 5 kilometers long in the Wolfenbüttel district in Lower Saxony . It rises on the edge of the Asse in Wittmar and flows into the Altenau from the left at Klein Denkte .

Geography and water quality

A brook rises at the Rothenberg in the Asse, but it is not mentioned as a source in the water quality report of the Lower Saxony State Office NLWKN . Rather, the western edge of Wittmar is given as the source. There it will soon be crossed by the federal highway 79 and, in heavily straightened sections, runs through the woodless slopes between Asse and Ösel . At Sottmar , he leaves the Hohberg, which measures around 105 meters, to the north and picks up the seesaw from the south . Before it flows into the Altenau, it flows in a straight line through Klein Thought. In the village it is lined with streets on both banks and is built over on a plot of land.

The Wittmars sewage treatment plant uses the creek as a receiving water , which is why it only receives quality classes II to III in the water quality report mentioned . The biodiversity and the fish population are very low. The structural quality and the ecological potential are rated as “bad” in the NLWKN's action plan , the chemical status as “not good”.
