The Rothenberger Hof is a desert near Geiselbach in the Spessart in the Aschaffenburg district in Bavaria . There is no longer a trace of the courtyard. In 1965 there were still a few ruins. Until about the year 2000 one could still see a piece of wall hidden in the forest on the edge of a hollow in the ground, which fell apart in the following years. Today the former location of the farm occupies a vacant space that was created when a forestry road was built.

geography

The place of the former farm is in the district of Omersbach , on the left and eastern slope of the densely wooded Teufelsgrund , between the Teufelsmühle and Hüttelngesäß , at about 250  m above sea level. NN in the forest area Kühruh am Kohlberg . The Bavarian-Hessian state border runs about 80 m to the south. From the deserted area of the Rothenberger Hof, two paths lead north, one to Dörnsteinbach and one to the Teufelsmühle. The path running to the southwest leads past the Hesselborn to Niedersteinbach .

Surname

It is often assumed that the name Rothenberger Hof derives from a family name. In fact, however, it is a clearing name , which is composed of the Middle High German words rode , bërc and hof and is reminiscent of a forest clearing . So it means farm on the clearing mountain . The field name Rotberg for the area between the Geiselbach and the Omersbach underpins this view. Although it was definitely only an estate , the name of the village "Rotenberg" is shown on a map from 1836. The nearby towns of Rothengrund , Rodenbach and Rottenberg also have the same name origin .

history

When the Rothenberger Hof was built is unknown, at least it appears on historical maps from 1728. An old survey map shows three buildings, presumably a house, a barn and an outbuilding with the inscription "Rodenbergshoff, belonging to the Seligenstadt monastery" . According to Seligenstadt documents, the area comprised 69 acres of fields and meadows (13.13 ha) and 76½ acres of forest (14.56 ha). On the map of the regional court Krombach from 1775 the farm is again listed.

To the south of the courtyard is a boundary stone from 1810 with the number 5 (see map). He separated the areas of two states of the then Rhine Confederation ; the Rothenberger Hof itself was still on the territory of the grand ducal Hessian province of Starkenburg in the district of Alzenau , on the other side of this border began the Mairie Niedersteinbach in the department of Aschaffenburg of the Grand Duchy of Frankfurt . Some of the stones on this borderline probably fell victim to woodcutting at the beginning of the 21st century.

Around 1850 the farm was put up for sale, which resulted in the property being divided into two house numbers. In those years, both farms consisted of a house with a cellar, a barn and cattle shed, a pigsty and a bakery. One of the properties also had an outbuilding with a small root garden. The homestead was small, the residential buildings no more than three feet long. At Rothenbergerborn , 30 m away , whose brook flows down to the Geiselbach , the residents were able to draw water.

Perhaps 1856 was the year of calamity. Storms are said to have devastated the fields of the Rothenberger Hof and washed them away. Thereupon the owner of the property no longer attached any importance to the preservation of the buildings and ordered the demolition. He had the courtyard, along with the fields and meadows, reforested and gradually returned to its original state.

Curiosities

Detail of the Pfinzing map from 1594. Rotberg is roughly in the center of the picture.

On Paul Pfinzing's Spessart map from 1594, a Rothenberger Hof is shown at a different location, namely about a kilometer further to the northeast on the mountain to the right of the Omersbach . It is not known whether the courtyard was really there at this time or whether the map stick was wrong.
