The Rottauensee , also called Rottstausee or Postmünster reservoir , is a reservoir near Postmünster in the Rottal-Inn district .

In 1954 the Rott flooded 7,000 hectares of agricultural land and brought down buildings and bridges. The floods of 1965 also caused damage. For example, the Free State of Bavaria built a retention basin near Postmünster from 1968 to 1973 . At the same time, a hydropower plant with an output of 300  kilowatts and a standard energy capacity of 1.1 million  kWh per year was built. The system consists of a Kaplan shaft turbine and a synchronous generator and was completely renovated in 2008.

The Rottauensee serves as a local recreation area for the city of Pfarrkirchen . There are numerous sports and leisure facilities around the lake, in particular golf and mini golf courses as well as tennis courts. Swimming, sailing and surfing are possible on the lake.

There is a boat harbor on the southern bank. There is a glider airfield nearby. Of the approx. 300 hectares of lake and shore area, approx. 20 hectares are biotope areas and 50 hectares are extensively cultivated meadow areas, which are home to some rare animal and plant species. The area is also an important resting place for migratory birds.

One problem is the strong algae production of the Rott, which is mainly due to the high proportion of arable land with numerous small sewage treatment plants in its catchment area. In May 2000, the mean P content in the Rottauensee was 0.28 mg / l (P total), of which about half was dissolved phosphorus (P as orthophosphate PO 4 3− ). Since then, the water quality has been checked at regular intervals. The peak of May 2000 has not been exceeded since then and is continuously falling.

In recent years, numerous measures have been taken to reduce the introduction of sediments from the upper reaches of the Rott. In the meantime, the water quality has stabilized and the Rottauensee is unreservedly recommended as a bathing lake.

Due to its proximity to the Pfarrkirchen outdoor pool, the Rottauensee has lost its importance in the past. Many visitors point to a reduced water quality due to the cloudy, slightly brown water color of the lake. However, the water color is due to the earthy subsoil of the lake and the sediments from the upper reaches.

The Rottauensee is attractive due to its favorable location (east-west orientation) in the Rottal for kitesurfers, windsurfers and sailors. The sunbathing lawn on the north bank and the bathing area on the right-hand side of the port exit are good starting points for water sports enthusiasts. There are enough free parking spaces in several places around the lake.

A slipway is available for sailors at the boat harbor.
