The Royal Crown Revue (RCR) is a band that was formed in Los Angeles in 1989 . The eight-piece music group is one of the best-known representatives of Neoswing and combines rockabilly , punk rock , blues with swing . Her appearances, in style, clothing and props of the 1940s, sparked a wave of nostalgia in the USA in early 1990.
Band history
Former punk singer Eddie Nichols and guitarist James Achor already played together in the rockabilly band the Rockomatics . By the late 1980s, however, punk and rockabilly music seemed to be dead in LA. The two met saxophonist Mando Dorame, who in turn was a big fan of Big Jay McNeely , and founded the Royal Crown Revue in 1989. The band had previously dealt with Jump Blues by Louis Prima and Louis Jordan and then with the most important swing artists. The mixture of blues , punk and rockabilly was called “hardboiled swing” or “gangster bop” by RCR itself. In contrast to many other Neoswing bands, RCR did not concentrate on covering well-known swing and jazz standards , but wrote their own lyrics and melodies directly. The Royal Crown Revue Band is often associated with the trigger for the swing revival at the end of the 1980s and the ensuing neoswing .
With the former members Mark and Adam Stern there were other musicians influenced by punk in the band. The brothers previously played with Youth Brigade , a hardcore punk band from California. The first album of the Royal Crown Revue: Kings of Gangster Bop was also released in 1991 on the BYO Records label founded by the Stern Brothers .
After this release, they played several hundred concerts a year in the US and Europe . From 1993, RCR was the house band in the fledgling club in Hollywood for 2 years . The band can be seen in the 1994 film comedy The Mask with the performance of their song hey Pachuco .
Their second album and fourth album were released in 1996 and 1998 on major label giant Warner Bros. Records . From 1998 to 1999 they provided the theme song for WB Television Network . They also worked with Bette Midler , from which z. B. the song one Monkey don't stop no show was created.
