Career

Club career

Rubén Marino Navarro, born in 1933 in the town of La Banda in the province of Santiago del Estero in north-western Argentina , began playing soccer at a small local club before moving to the youth department of the prestigious CA Independiente from Avellaneda . There he played from 1952 in the youth and from 1954 finally also in the first team. At the time, this was one of the best teams in the Argentine Primera División . They played for the championship year after year, but Rubén Navarro was only able to achieve the title of Argentine football champion twice with Independiente. In the Primera División 1960 they ranked after the end of all game days in first place in the table with a lead of two points over CA River Plate . Three years later, the second title was won when they were again first in the Primera División in the 1963 season , this time with a two-point lead over River Plate. This championship was of particular importance for Independiente. Because with her the first two victories in the Copa Libertadores began . As the Argentine champions of 1963 for the Copa Libertadores 1964 , they penetrated after a semi-final triumph over the Brazilian defending champions FC Santos into the final, where Nacional Montevideo from Uruguay was waiting as opponents . After a goalless first leg, a goal from Mario Rodríguez gave Independiente 1-0 victory in the second leg and thus a triumph in the Copa Libertadores. Rubén Navarro did not complete both finals due to an injury. The following year, however, he was there when Independiente was again in the final for the most important competition for club teams in South America . Entering the race as the defending champion, they defeated league rivals CA Boca Juniors in the semifinals and entered the final again, where another Uruguayan representative was waiting with CA Peñarol . After Independiente and Peñarol won the first and second leg, a playoff had to decide the 1965 Copa Libertadores winner . Here Independiente was clearly superior and drove a sure 4: 1 success, which secured the title defense in the Copa Libertadores. This time Rubén Navarro was in defense of Independiente Avellaneda in all three final games.

Navarro played for CA Independiente until 1966. By the time he left the Estadio La Doble Visera , the club had made 209 league appearances. Navarro did not succeed in scoring. He then moved to the American North American Soccer League to the Philadelphia Spartans , where he played for a year and made fourteen games during this time and also scored the only goal of his professional career during this time. In 1968 he played for the Cleveland Stokers in the same league before ending his footballing career at the age of 35.

National team

Between 1960 and 1963 Rubén Navarro made a total of 32 international matches in the Argentine national football team . A goal he did not succeed here. He was appointed to the South American squad for the 1962 World Cup in Chile by national coach Juan Carlos Lorenzo . In the tournament, the defender even acted as the captain of the Argentine selection. At the world tournament in the neighboring country, however, they had to return home after the preliminary round. After an opening win against newcomer Bulgaria (1-0), England lost 3-1, and there was a goalless draw against Hungary . These results finally only reached third place in the group behind Hungary and England and in front of Bulgaria, which ultimately led to the departure of the team around captain Navarro.
