Rudi Arndt (resistance fighter)

Rudolf ("Rudi") Arndt (born April 26, 1909 in Berlin ; † May 3, 1940 in Buchenwald concentration camp ) was a German communist and resistance fighter against National Socialism .

Life

Arndt was the son of an official. Arndt joined the Black Heap , a left-wing Jewish youth group, while still at secondary school . In 1926 Arndt became its Berlin director. In 1927 he joined the Red Youth Front, in 1928 the Communist Youth Association of Germany (KJVD) and became a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg district management of the KJVD. In 1931 he completed his apprenticeship as a typesetter . During his apprenticeship in 1930/31, he represented the interests of young people employed in the graphic arts in the Berlin organization of the Association of German Book Printers . The successor organization today is the ver.di union .

In April 1931 Arndt was first arrested for his political activities and on May 4, 1932, one and a half years imprisonment convicted. Due to a general amnesty, however, he was released from the Groß-Strelitz fortress in November 1932 and became a member of the Central Committee of the KJVD in the same month.

In 1933 Arndt took part in the illegal fight against the Nazi regime in the Ruhr area and Berlin . He was arrested on October 12, 1933 and sentenced on October 15, 1934 to three years in prison. After serving his imprisonment, Arndt was sent to the Sachsenhausen and Dachau concentration camps . In 1938 he was deported to Buchenwald concentration camp as a “political Jew” . After his arrival, Arndt initially worked for a construction team for a short time. In 1938/1939 he worked as a nurse for Jewish prisoners and was a block elder in Block 22. He was very committed to the Jewish patients, which the SS greatly disliked. After being denounced by criminal inmates in the quarry, the SS supposedly shot him “while on the run”.
