Rudolf "Rudi" Flögel (born December 13, 1939 in Vienna ) is a former Austrian national soccer player . From 1958 to 1972 he was active for Rapid as a striker and midfielder. In total, he was called up for the Austrian national team 40 times . He is the father of footballer Thomas Flögel .

Career

Rudi Flögel began his career in 1952 at FC Weißgärber and later joined the A-League club SK Rapid Wien , for which he made his debut in 1958/59 . At Rapid, the filigree player became a midfielder who was also used as a winger at times and was characterized by his technique and shooting power. Rudi Flögel spent most of his career with the Hütteldorfer, a total of 14 seasons in which he was also four times Austrian champion and cup winner . Internationally, there are the European Cup semi-finals in 1961 and two quarter-finals in 1967 and 1969.

Rudi Flögel made his debut in the Austrian national team on May 29, 1960 in a 4-1 victory over Scotland . He became a regular player during the Decker era, scoring his first team goal in a 3-1 victory over the Soviet Union in front of 92,000 spectators in the Prater Stadium . By 1969, Rudi Flögel played a total of 40 times in the Austrian national team. Austria's 3-2 victory over England at Wembley Stadium in 1965, in which he also appeared as a goal scorer , is often cited as one of his best games .

At the end of his career, Rudi Flögel was brought to Lower Austria by SV Admira Wiener Neustadt, who had been promoted to the national league in 1972/73 , where, however, he did not succeed in relegation, so Rudi Flögel moved on to 1. Simmeringer SC , for whom he was in the 1973/74 for the last time highest league. He stayed with Simmeringern (who had reached 11th place out of 17 clubs), who had been transferred to the second highest level of the game, now referred to as the "National League", first as a player, then as a coach. Further stations as a coach were for example Neusiedl, Sportclub, Baden, Stockerau and Prater SV.
