With the Rudolf Virchow Lecture , well-known researchers of the Paleolithic and Middle Stone Age archeology were honored annually between 1987 and 2016 . The prize is named after Rudolf Virchow . The award was made by the Paleolithic Research Department (since 2012: Monrepos Archaeological Research Center and Museum for Human Behavioral Evolution ) of the Roman-Germanic Central Museum based at Monrepos Castle (Neuwied) , to which Virchow's working method feels particularly connected.

The physician, archaeologist and politician Rudolf Virchow (1821–1902) founded the interdisciplinary archeology , which was shaped by natural sciences . He gave anthropology , zoology , botany , geology and chemistry a permanent place in archaeological research. At the same time, the liberal March revolutionary was involved in social policy, he opposed colonial policy and anti-Semitic tendencies.

Rudolf Virchow, as a long-time member of the entire board of the Roman-Germanic Central Museum in Mainz, successfully campaigned for its independence. His holistic, innovative research method, which is based on natural sciences, his social commitment and his fundamental conviction of freedom are role models for modern archeology.

The public Rudolf Virchow lecture took place in the Neuwied Castle Theater . In order to make new research results accessible and understandable to a wide audience, it was always presented in German.

The Rudolf Virchow Lecture was one of the oldest public lecture series on the archeology of the Paleolithic in Germany. The lectures were published as essays in the yearbook of the Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum until 2002.
