Paul Rudolf Berliner (born April 14, 1886 in Ohlau ; died August 26, 1967 in Berchtesgaden ) was a German art historian.

Life

Rudolf Berliner was the son of Siemens manager Theodor Berliner (1851–1915) and Philippine Wollner. Berliner studied art history in Berlin, Heidelberg and Vienna, where he received his doctorate in 1910 under Josef Strzygowski and Max Dvořák . He was employed by the Bavarian National Museum in 1912 . Berliner was a reserve lieutenant in the Queen Elisabeth Guard Grenadier Regiment No. 3 and was a soldier for four years in the First World War. In 1919 he returned to the service of the museum as a scientific employee, he was promoted to custodian in 1920 and senior custodian in 1926, which was associated with the title of professor. He was married to Charlotte Bever (1881–1981), whose family owned the Schneewinkellehen house in Schönau am Königssee . They had two sons.

After the handover of power to the National Socialists in 1933, Berliner was imprisoned in the Dachau concentration camp , but was released again through the initiative of colleagues Wilhelm Pinder and Hans Buchheit and the art dealer and old fighter Eugen Brüschwiler. Because of the front-line fighter privilege , he remained in office until 1935, when the racist measures of the German state were tightened. He sent the two sons to the USA. He himself only managed to emigrate to the USA in 1939.

Berliner found employment in New York at the Museum of the Arts of Decoration of the Cooper Union and from 1946 at the Museum of Fine Arts of the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence . From 1962 he conducted research at the Textile Museum in Washington, DC
