El prófugo (international title: The Intruder ) is an Argentine - Mexican feature film by Natalia Meta from 2020 , which celebrated its world premiere on February 21, 2020 in competition at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival . The thriller , for which the director also wrote the script, is based freely on the horror novel El mal menor by CE Feiling from 1996. It tells the story of a woman (portrayed by Érica Rivas ) who is haunted by nightmares and surreal perceptual disorders .

action

The young Inés is in a relationship with Leopoldo and lives in Buenos Aires . She works as a voice actress and sings in a choir. During a vacation trip together in Mexico, her significant other falls to her death from the balcony of the hotel room. Inés suffers a severe shock. Back in her native Argentina, she torments herself with insomnia and violent nightmares. Inés then sought psychiatric help and was treated with medication. Soon she has the feeling that the line between reality and madness is threatening to dissolve. In addition to the nightmares, she begins to perceive eerie noises. These seem to come straight from their vocal cords and are picked up by microphones while working in the recording studio. The tones disrupt the synchronization work and also endanger Inés' position as a singer in the choir. The daily torments also shape her relationship with her mother Marta.

During a choir rehearsal, Inés accidentally made the acquaintance of the young and sensitive Alberto, who had a fascination for her. She becomes increasingly paranoid and is soon convinced that the characters from the dreams want to take possession of their bodies. She expels the mother from her apartment. The attempt to ban Albert from her life, however, fails, and she confesses to her relationship with him. Shortly afterwards Inés has another successful performance with the choir.

background

For Natalia Meta, El prófugo is the second feature film as a director and screenwriter after the award-winning crime drama Mord in Buenos Aires (2014) with Demián Bichir and Chino Darín .

The shooting was scheduled for eight weeks and took place in Buenos Aires and Playa del Carmen .

It is a production by Rei Cine .

reception

Leading actress Érica Rivas (2017)

Carlo Chatrian , Artistic Director of the Berlinale, highlighted the strong acting performance of Érica Rivas at the official launch of the competition at the end of January 2020 . The focus is also on the “universe of sounds”. If it were at El prófugo a " Noir -" and a genre film, the other issues such as gender boundaries and "how we perceive other people and they perceive us," anspreche so Chatrian.

A first trailer for the film, advertised as a “psycho-sexual fantastic thriller”, was published shortly after the Berlinale press conference. The US industry magazine Variety then drew comparisons with the works of Roman Polański and Brian De Palma . Director Meta doesn't care about naturalism in her staging and presents an “outstanding visual style” in the trailer, behind which the “completely polished” camera by Bárbara Álvarez from Uruguay stands. Both Mord in Buenos Aires and El prófugo had a “very broad color palette” and, like De Palma's films, could not be fully classified in one genre category.

Awards

Natalia Meta competed with El prófugo for the first time for the Golden Bear , the main prize of the Berlinale.
