Act

Rudolf Bucher developed a great deal of research in the field of whole blood and blood plasma transfusions . In 1941 he was appointed head of the blood donation service in the Swiss Army . Out of medical interest, Bucher took part in the "Voluntary Swiss Doctors Mission" on the Eastern Front , which was controversial in terms of neutrality policy between 1941 and 1942 . There he witnessed the shooting of 62 Russian hostages by the Germans and learned about the mass extermination of the Jews and the conditions in the concentration camps . The authorities then obstructed his efforts to inform the Swiss public about what was happening on the Eastern Front. It was only in 1967 that he presented the comprehensive report "Between betrayal and humanity. Experiences of a Swiss doctor on the German-Russian front 1941/42" .

In addition, Bucher's commitment was to rescue services . In 1952 he co-founded the Swiss Air Rescue Service (Rega) .
