Rudolf Carsten (born April 29, 1880 in Lübeck- Vorwerk; † September 7, 1954 ; full name Rudolf Hinrich Christian Carsten ) was a German plant breeder or seed breeder who became known worldwide through pioneering breeding of new wheat varieties .

life and work

Growing up as the son of a farmer, Rudolf Carsten was already engaged as a child with the selection and propagation of grain with particularly large ears and strong straw as well as flat peas . He mainly acquired his knowledge as an autodidact . In 1900 he started the first planned crossings, in 1903 he presented the "Hafer I" as a result. In 1905 he leased a piece of land in Schwartau and began growing wheat , rye , barley and oats with higher yields and better winter hardiness. From 1907 he was able to breed the wheat varieties "III" and "IV" from the wheat varieties that had survived the previous harsh winter. In 1910 he first presented a variety of wheat he had developed at an agricultural fair. In 1913 he presented his "Dickkopfweizen III", a variety with a high yield and good winter hardiness; the turnover was 65 tons of seeds. In 1921 he brought out the "Dickkopfweizen V", which was very popular. In 1924 the Carsten Saatbau cooperative was founded . After 1928, the amount of seeds sold rose to up to 45,000 tons per year, and the types of grain he cultivated temporarily achieved a market share of 90% in Germany.

From 1929 he lived in Groß Parin on the Pariner farm he had bought .
