Life

Rudolf Cobet, the son of a pharmacist of the same name, completed a medical degree at the universities of Jena , Tübingen , Munich , Marburg and Gießen . He then went back to Jena University, where he received his doctorate in medicine in 1913, thus completing his studies. In the following year he began working as a senior physician in several field hospitals that lasted until 1918 . For this he received the Iron Cross 2nd class .

After the end of the war, Cobet was employed as an assistant doctor at the University of Greifswald , where he qualified as a professor in 1920 . The following year he was appointed senior physician and private lecturer at the University of Jena . Two years later the university promoted him to a non-official associate professor . In 1926 he went to the clinic of the University of Breslau as senior physician.

From 1930 Cobet acted as medical director of the lung sanatorium in Beelitz-Heilstätten . In 1931 he completed his habilitation at the Humboldt University in Berlin . He gave up his position in Beelitz in 1934 and became medical director of the internal department at the Rudolf Virchow Hospital in Berlin . Two years later he left the hospital and received the chair for internal medicine at the University of Halle . This appointment was not without controversy, because the NSDAP , which Cobet had joined on May 1, 1933, wanted to bring the Nazi activist Heinz Kürten to this office. Therefore, Cobet was only able to take up the full professorship in 1938. He also became director of the university clinic . In 1939 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

From 1939 Cobet worked in the Halle Army Medical Unit and then became senior physician in the Elbingen reserve hospital. He held this position until May 1940. In October 1945 he had to give up the professorship, but was able to take it again the following year. In 1956 he finally retired . Eight years later he died in Halle at the age of 76.
