Rudolf Dietsch
Heinrich Rudolf Dietsch (born March 16, 1814 in Mylau (Vogtland), † December 29, 1875 in Stötteritz ) was a German philologist , historian and educator.
Life
Dietsch lost his father, who was the director of a factory in Mylau, at the age of four. In a difficult financial situation, his mother moved to Reichenbach , where Dietsch attended school. In 1824 he moved to the grammar school in Zeitz and in 1832 began to study classical philology at the University of Leipzig . At that time Johann Gottfried Jakob Hermann was his most formative teacher. In addition, he attended the lectures on Roman and Greek antiquities with Ernst Wilhelm Gottfried Wachsmuth and the lectures on Athenian constitutional history and the history of ancient rhetoric with Anton Westermann . In 1836 he moved to the University of Halle-Wittenberg , where he was accepted into the educational seminar. Here he dealt with the history of philosophy with Hermann Friedrich Wilhelm Hinrichs , the Greek literary history and Aristotle poetics with Gottfried Bernhardy and the more recent history with Heinrich Leo .
As early as Easter 1836 he became an assistant teacher at the Latin school of the orphanage in Halle and at the beginning of 1837 he switched to teaching at the grammar school in Hildburghausen . After Dietsch had obtained his doctorate in philosophy in Leipzig in 1840, he was appointed the ninth senior teacher at the Saxon state school St. Augustin in Grimma on May 20, 1840 , a task that he took over on August 10 that year. Because of his post he rose to the seventh senior teacher in 1842, became sixth professor in 1846, fifth professor in 1850 and fourth professor in 1860. On October 8, 1861 he became director of the grammar school and the associated secondary school in Plauen and on May 28, 1866 rector and first professor in Grimma. As such, he became a knight of the Imperial Russian Order of St. Anne in 1864, and from 1848 to 1862 he was co-editor of Jahn's yearbooks for philology and education for many years . In 1872 he retired and died on December 29, 1875 in the insane asylum in Stötteritz near Leipzig.
Of his philological achievements, the editions of Eutropius (historian) , Herodotus , Cicero's selected letters, Cornelius Nepos are of no particular value; those of Sallust are more important (Leipz. 1843–46, 2 volumes; new review 1859; text edition, 4th ed. 1874; Catiline with notes, 1864). However, he is best known for his history books: the textbook of history (3 volumes, Leipzig 1847–51 and more often), the floor plan of history (Leipzig 1854, 3 parts .; 9th edition, edited by G. Richter, 1883 ff.) and the outline of Brandenburg-Prussian history (5th edition, Leipzig 1882).
On May 23, 1839 Dietsch married Bianca, the daughter of the Leipzig publisher Benedikt Gotthelf Teubner.
